Google, decided to open the first artificial intelligence (AI) research center in Asia in Beijing, China. The reason for targeting talented people from the country, although Google is still blocked in the country.

In 2010, Google in the world’s most populous country was lost by local company Baidu. The Chinese government censorship known as the Great Firewall. This term imitates the famous historical legacy of China, Great Wall. Popular Google digital services like Gmail, Google Drive, Play Store and more are inaccessible in China. China’s cyber regulators say the restrictions on foreign media and Internet platforms are designed to withstand the opposite effects of stability and socialist ideas.

However, the limitations of the Chinese government did not dampen Google’s decision to build a research center there. The AI research center will be the first in Asia. Similar facilities are owned by Google in New York, Toronto, London and Zurich.

As reported by Reuters on Wednesday (13/12), Google’s decision to build an AI research center due to the desire to recruit local talent in China.

“I believe AI and its benefits have no borders. Whether a breakthrough occurs in Silicon Valley, Beijing or anywhere else, it has the potential to make everyone’s life better for the entire world,” Fei-Fei Li, a prominent AI researcher and the chief scientist at Google Cloud, said in a blog post.

“As an AI first company, this is an important part of our collective mission. And we want to work with the best AI talent, wherever that talent is, to achieve it.”

Li said the artificial intelligence center has the potential to encourage the development of self-driving cars and automated factories and face recognition software. Google China’s is reported to have recruited several candidate engineer artificial intelligence.

“Focused on basic AI research, the Center will consist of a team of AI researchers in Beijing, supported by Google China’s strong engineering teams. We’ve already hired some top experts, and will be working to build the team in the months ahead.” Li added.

In May, Chinese social media and technology conglomerate Tencent said it would open an AI lab in Seattle, signifying that Chinese tech companies are also trying to lure AI workers in the USA.

AI First

Google claims to be a technology company that values “AI First”. In other words, all the types of technology they develop today are definitely supported by artificial intelligence.

As conveyed Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, in the Google I/O 2017 several months ago, the world of technology is no longer struggling on conventional mobile-based technology.

According to him, now the world has evolved from “Mobile First” to “AI First” due to the development of advanced technology.
